Freechild Institute’s new online course is launching NOW!

It’s called “How To Grow Modern Youth Leaders” and…

  • It is centered on seeing, treating and engaging every youth as a leader;
  • It is creative, intense and meaningful learning for professionals and others;
  • It is four live online sessions not available anywhere else right now;
  • It is focused on diverse youth and ethical action
  • Each online session includes hands-on interaction, critical thinking and deep outcomes.

Based on the book Steps to Youth Leadership in Modern Times by Adam F.C. Fletcher of the Freechild Institute for Youth Engagement, this online course is also facilitated by the author. Fletcher is a long-time practitioner and advocate and is recognized internationally for his expertise in youth leadership.

Paid participants will receive an e-copy of the book and certificates will be available on request.

Learning Objectives

In this four-session online course participants will…

  1. Learn about modern youth leadership in its depth, breadth and purpose
  2. Explore various ways to implement programs and activities to foster youth engagement
  3. Identify practical, meaningful next steps within their individual settings

Participants can receive an electronic certificate of completion for any session or the entire online course.

Recommended Participants

Any adult who supports young people are invited to participate. This can include parents, teachers, youth workers, social workers, mental health providers, higher education, community educators, neighborhood leaders, school principals, elected officials, government staff, pre-service teachers, youth advocates, camp counselors, nonprofit executives, school board members, and others. Youth always receive free registration with any paid adult registrant to attend any Freechild Institute course.

  • A stable internet connection and zoom capability are required. Session recordings will not be available. If you miss an online session there are no make-ups

ONLINE SESSION DESCRIPTIONS

This is a 4-part online course. Participants must pay for all sessions—scholarships are available—contact us for info. Session completion certificates are available upon request.

Session 1.

Date: Tuesday, May 21, 2024, 10am Pacific/1pm Eastern (60 minutes)

Required Reading: Introduction through Chapter 3, Steps to Youth Leadership in Modern Times.

Description: There are three parts to Session 1. The first part is an introduction to modern youth leadership, addressing the questions of why youth leaders don’t lead today, where to actually see youth leadership, and the ways youth leadership happens today. The second part addresses the roles of adults in youth leadership, including the ways adults see youth leaders, the motives behind our actions, and how our relationships with youth affect leadership everyday. The third part of this session highlights the breadth of youth leadership, including justice and diversity, cultural context, purpose and authenticity.

Online Session 2.

Date: Tuesday, May 28, 2024, 10am Pacific/1pm Eastern (60 minutes)

Required Reading: Chapter Four and Chapter Five, Steps to Youth Leadership in Modern Times

Description: In this session, participants will examine the role of intentionality in youth leadership activities. This session will examine the Domains of Modern Youth Leadership and what 360° youth involvement looks like. Participants will learn different methods for modern youth leadership, and how to plan with them. This session will also explore where it happens, including various places and spaces and stories from modern times.

Online Session 3.

Date: Tuesday, June 4, 2024, 10am Pacific/1pm Eastern (60 minutes)

Required Reading: Chapter Six and Seven, Steps to Youth Leadership in Modern Times

Description: This session will explore how time affects modern youth leaders, including the time of life, the challenges of time and different perspectives on time. It will examine legit barriers to Modern Youth Leadership, including toxicity and how to overcome the barriers. It will also explore critical thinking among youth leaders, how to measure youth leadership, and thinking outside the box.

Online Session 4.

Date: Tuesday, June 11, 2024, 10am Pacific/1pm Eastern (60 minutes)

Required Reading: Chapter Eight and Nine, Steps to Youth Leadership in Modern Times

Description: In the final session, participants will commit to sustain modern youth leadership by learning how to plan for the long-term, diving into new pathways beyond today, and seeing an ecology of modern youth leadership throughout society. Resources, tools and next steps will be revealed as well, with a special tool for participants available only in this session!

Facilitator Adam F.C. Fletcher is a co-founder of the Freechild Institute for Youth Engagement and the longtime director of the organization. The author of more than 50 publications related to youth engagement, Fletcher has been published by ASCD, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, the US Department of Education and other educational organizations. He has partnered with 500 youth organizations internationally and personally coordinated more than 150 youth engagement projects.
