Since 2001, Freechild Institute has supported young people changing the world. If you work for youth voice, youth engagement, youth empowerment, youth leadership, or many other areas, you’ll find tools, examples and more throughout our website. If you are struggling against racism, economic discrimination, educational inequities or other social justice issues, our website can teach you how to connect with children and youth.
Engaging young people in social change can move children and youth to feel more ownership in their lives and demonstrate a more giving role in the community. It is easy to connect just about anything you are passionate about to changing the world.
The Freechild Institute Advisory Board is a dedicated group of social leaders who bring a wealth of knowledge and share an interest in carrying forward the history and purpose of social justice through youth empowerment.
Freechild Institute staff is dedicated to facilitating powerful training and sharing carefully constructed resources that guide young people and adult allies to empowerment, engagement, social justice, and transformational change throughout society. Co-founded by Adam Fletcher with a group of youth advocates from around the world in 2001, today Freechild is a recognized international leader organization among children and youth.
“By far the largest repository of projects, ideas, and organizational links, this resource provides more than adequate information to help students brainstorm ideas in order to start their own initiatives.” – School Library Journal
In addition to our website, we also offer training, program consultation, and technical assistance for children, youth and adults. Moving beyond simple concepts, we identify the roots of adultism; build structures to support youth integration; and transform roles for adults as allies to young people.
“The Freechild Project is especially relevant in getting young people to participate in the realms of politics and critical education.” – Henry Giroux
Freechild Institute was founded by a team of youth advocates from across the United States and Canada in September 2001. Since then, it has been led by a volunteer advisory board and Adam Fletcher. Freechild has several trainers, interns and volunteers who have served the project over the years. Today, Freechild Institute is located in Olympia, Washington, USA.
